Mini Ulta Haul ~ Jane Cosmetics

My “i” key is stuck-ish, like there is a crumb crammed underneath it, so if I my spelling seems wonky, that is why!

This past week has been a bit crazy, thus my slacking in terms of posts. I wasn’t able to get up my Mani Monday post last week, but there is a picture on my Instagram account – the link is in the sidebar, if you are interested. Work has been busy, but gradually slowing down. I have finally found a new trainer to help me out!! Additionally, he has lots of previous training experience, meaning I do not have to spend weeks teaching him the ropes. However, he is slightly different, style-wise, which is both good and not-so-good. Good because I have found that his knowledge-base can teach me lots of new and effective techniques, but not-so-good because he already has so much experience meaning it is hard to find a balance between his style and mine. It has only been a couple days though, so we’ll have time to work out the kinks.

ANYWAYS, on with the haul! I received an Ulta gift card from my mom for Easter, so I stopped by on my lunch break to pick up a few things. I was originally going to pick up another DipBrow Pomade from Anastasia, but they had absolutely NONE left. I remembered hearing about Jane Cosmetics from Tati of GlamLifeGuru, so I headed over to that section. And low and behold, they were having a special – buy any two eye or lip products for $10! So I picked up the following:

Jane_Clay Matte Eyeshadow

Eye Shadow in Clay Matte: I picked up this color in the hopes that it would be a good crease/transition shade. The color is exactly as the name describes – a matte, clay-like color, which equates to a soft brown. It was slightly powdery when I swatched it, but had good color pay off for a light color.Jane_Lime Green & Black Eyeliner

Water Resistant Eye Liner is Lime Green & Matte Black: I was in need of a new black, retractable liner and had heard good things about Jane’s so grabbed the black. I also noticed this vibrant, awesome bright green as well and had to snag it. I posted a look with the lime green on my Instagram, if you want to see how it looks on! When I swatched these and let them dry for a moment, they definitely have some staying power, but if rubbed they will come off. Interestingly, the black rubbed off gradually, but the lime green came off all in one kind of chunk. Hmm.

Jane_Metallic Lilac Water Resistant Liquid Liner

Water Resistant Liquid Liner in Metallic Lilac: From the picture above, you would assume that the color is a purple shade, but in person it looks more like a metallic pink. However, it does apply as a purple. No biggie, as it is beautiful and stays PUT. When swatched, it dried with a unbudging finish; when rubbed, just a small amount of the shimmer came off.

What Jane products have you tried and what did you think?

Mani Monday + New Vanity!

Let Mani Monday begin!

I picked up a matte top coat from Revlon on a whim earlier this week and decided to play around with it a little! I simply applied two coats of Essie’s Aruba Blue, let it dry, painted it over with the matte coat, then used a dotting tool to make a dotted pattern.

I also picked up this beautiful sparkle polish, also from Essie, called On a Silver Platter. It has silver micro-glitter with larger flecks of blue sparkles and applies opaque with two coats.

On a side note – the boy and I went to an antique faire this weekend to pick up a new dresser. Ok, I drug him there, but it was nice of him to join! The original plan was to find a dresser as I was in need of more storage space for my growing collection of makeup, but after perusing the stalls I found that it was going to be more practical and cost effective to pick up this amazingly cute turquoise vanity!

The drawers are already pretty full, but I cannot get over how adorable it is!

Happy Monday everyone!

FOTD: Ocean Sunset Makeup Look

Ocean Sunset FOTD

While perusing Youtube, I came across a video by Dulce Candy and immediately fell in love with the look she did! You can find her original here. I basically used all the same techniques as she did, I just had to find comparable colors in my collection. I love this look because you can pretty much switch up the colors any way you want and still have it come out amazing!

Step 1: Prep your skin. Apply serums, moisturizer & primers to face and eyes in whatever order or way you usually do.

Step 2: Apply your eye shadows. Because this look is a little more sparkly and dramatic, I opted to do my shadows first, as opposed to my foundation, so that I could clean up any fall out or mistakes more easily afterwards.Ocean Sunset FOTD

  1. Place a soft, matte brown into your crease using a fluffly brush. Blend upwards and continuing swishing brush back and forth until the shadow looks blown out and no harsh lines are seen. I used Matt Rosen from theBalm’s Meet Matt(e) Palette. theBalm Meet Matt(e) Palette
  2. With a shader brush, place a bright, shimmery gold shade all over your lid. Alternatively, you could just apply the gold shade to the inner half of the eye. I used Cargo’s Crème Brulée from the Meet Me In Paris Palette.Cargo Meet Me In Paris Palette
  3. Next, find a bright pink shadow and place it on the outer half of your lid. Pack on the color as we want it to stand out! Blend into the gold shade so that you do not have a stark line. I used my 120 Color BH palette.BH Palette
  4. Once you get the intensity you want, go back in with your fluffy brush and blend out any harsh lines.
  5. Next for the lower lid! Grab a teal eye liner and line your lower lash line and water line. I used a NYX retractable eye liner, but any will do. Once done, use a teal eyeshadow on a pencil brush and smoke out the liner you just placed down. Go all the way from outer corner to inner corner. I used my Wet ‘n Wild palette for this.Wet 'n Wild Shadows
  6.  On to the liner! I used the L’Oreal Infallible 24hr. Gel Liner, but any black liner will do. Wing it out a bit, if you want. Also, line your upper water line with a black pencil to give the lashes a more voluminous look.
  7. Highlight your brow bone and the inner corners of your eyes with a shimmery shadow to make them pop even more.
  8. Fill in your brows, apply mascara and prep your lips (I used Anastasia’s DipBrow Pomade & Clear Setting Gel, and NYX’s retractable lip pencil in Nude with Stila Gloss in Kitten on top).Ocean Sunset FOTD lip and brow products
  9. Do your foundation, concealer, powder, blush, etc. routine as you normally would. I used these products:

Excuse the Rimmel Stay Matte powder, he had an accident.

Excuse the Rimmel Stay Matte powder, he had an accident.

And voilà! You should have look that resembles the sun setting over the ocean.

Ocean Sunset Look

False lashes look great with this look, as well!

I hope you enjoy this look! If you recreate it, tag me on instagram @beautynbowwows or on twitter @beautynbowwows, I would love to see what you  come up with!

Nutrition Challenge ~ COMPLETE!

Embed from Getty Images

Monday marked the final day of the nutrition challenge I had been participating in with my boot camp. I do not really consider myself to be a competitive person, but I find having a group of motivated people around me brings out the competitiveness. So maybe I am a tad competitive!

In order to determine a winner, we are being scored on three different items:

  1. Overall point score (see my post here for description on point system)
  2. Best time overall on bench mark workout (see below for workout details)
  3. Most improved times on bench mark & in weight/measurements.

My goal had been to lose 10lbs. in six weeks, which I knew was going to be a stretch. My final weight, measurements & times are as follows:

                       Day 1:                                                  Day 42:

  • Weight: 118.8 lbs.  ——————    112.8 lbs.
  • Waist: 25.5 in. ————————    22.5 in.
  •  Hips: 35.5 in. ————————-     34.5 in.

Bench Mark Workout

Run 1/2 mile

  • 3 Rounds of:
  • 100 Jumping Jacks
  • 80 Mountain Climbers (total)
  • 60 Squats
  • 40 Push Ups
  • 20 Burpees

Run 1 mile

I didn’t get a look at my original bench mark time, but I improved by 6 minutes!! Running is not my forte, so I knew that I needed to do the exercises as quickly as possible in order to get a head start on the run. I ended up being the first done with the circuit, but had to sprint the last quarter mile to keep my first place spot.  I ended up coming in a second or two after our resident marathon runner.

We will hopefully have the results next week – we do not know what the prize will be yet, but I am hoping for a FREE month of boot camp! In celebration, I ate the most delicious piece of chocolate torte, and then subsequently had a huge stomach ache. Totally worth it.

MyFitnessPal app was been my best friend these last 6 weeks, and I am going to stick with it as I found it extremely helpful in seeing my calorie intake and keeping myself on track. Plus, bathing suit season is already here and I’ve got my eye on a new bikini!

What are you doing to get summer ready?

BnBW Re-Introduction & TMI Tag! {Zero to Hero Day 1}

Who am I?

I am participating in the Zero To Hero Challenge and have received my first assignment today! We are charged with describing who we are and why we are blogging. My About Me page and Bio are fairly short and to the point; only highlighting a few bullet points about who I am, what I do, what I love, etc. However, I am much more than what I do professionally and love much more than beauty. In order to give you more insight into my personality, life, motivations, dreams, and just randomness about me, I would like to re-introduce myself in more detail than previously offered.

Family Life:

  • I am the eldest of 4 children; I have a younger sister and two younger brothers.
  • I was born and raised in Northern California, specifically in the Bay Area, and more specifically in the Sonoma Wine Country.
  • My parents are still together and have been married for 29 years.
  • Growing up, I always disliked being the oldest because my parents always wanted me to “set an example” for my siblings. Which to me meant that I wasn’t allowed to make mistakes and was judged more for the mistakes I did make, while my siblings were allowed to screw up.
  • I would say that I did set a good example – HOWEVER, my example didn’t really rub off on my siblings – I’ll spare you the details on that one!
  • I wasn’t close to my parents, especially my mom, until after I was officially moved out and living with the boy. It’s amazing what separation can do for a relationship!

 High School:

High School Band Performance

That’s a piccolo in my hand, get your mind out of the gutter!

  • I was kind of a nerd – I was in the marching band, wind ensemble, and drum line.
  • I took any AP class I could get into and never drank or went to parties.
  • When applying for colleges, my original plan was to go for a fashion design degree (something I had wanted to do since I was 6), but realized late that that wasn’t something I had a passion for or was good at (I was never very trendy).
  • For about 2 weeks, I got it in my head that I wanted to major in equine studies, even though I had pretty no experience with horses.
  • I finally had to think about what my most favorite subject in school was and then went with – French Translation.

College Life:

UH Warriors Tailgate

  • I applied to 7 colleges, half of them on the East Coast as I wanted to move as far away from my parents as possible (teenagers).
  • I was wait listed at my top 2 choices, won a scholarship to one in New York, was accepted to a couple UC’s, but eventually decided on the University of Hawai’i at Mãnoa as they are one of the only schools in the country that had programs in interpretation & translation. Plus, who doesn’t want to go to school in Hawai’i?!?!
  • I completed my freshman year, went back for my sophomore year and then promptly dropped out a couple weeks later due to a crappy, jealous boyfriend who was living back home.
  • I went home, moved to Tennessee for 6 months, then moved back home (thank GOD!) and re-entered UHM for my junior year.
  • I switched my major to psychology and graduated with my BA.

  • I had decided late in my senior year that I was more interested in dog psychology than people psychology, so I went back to my seasonal receptionist job at a pet care facility in the hopes of eventually moving on to service dog training.
  • A year & a half later, one of the 2-person training department team quit and I was promptly sent to dog training school!
  • Another 1 1/2 years passed, the original trainer also quit, and I was bumped up to Head Trainer and the Training Department Supervisor. Sounds fancy, right? Not really – I am currently the only person in my department.

  • I started this blog just a month or so ago.
  • I had been thinking about starting a Youtube channel, but couldn’t get up the courage.
  • I just had so many thoughts and opinions on beauty products, but had no one to discuss it with, so I entered the World Wide Web to find some like-minded people!

  • I want to one day have enough doggie-clients that I can move up to managing a group of trainers, as opposed to just managing everything by myself.
  • Eventually, get married, have kids, you  know the usual.
  • Pay off all my credit cards and student loans!
  • Have a small herd of dogs.

So! That is me in a slightly bigger nutshell. Just for fun, I also went ahead and did the TMI Tag – see my questions/answers below!

Mani Monday ~ Blue & Silver Mix & Match

Happy Monday! I, unlike a lot of people, do not mind Mondays. This is probably because I don’t work on Mondays, so I guess my opinion on the subject doesn’t really count.

Are you an Ulta Platinum Member?? If so, check your email for a 50% discount coupon on all (or pretty much all) of their services at The Salon! That is what I woke up to this morning and promptly called at 10:00am when they opened to make my appointment. They were able to fit me in today, so I am feeling pretty snazzy at the moment!

I thought about doing an Easter themed mani today, but painting eggs and bunnies on my nails didn’t sound appealing to me, so instead I started perusing pinterest (follow me here!) for some inspiration. This is what I came up with:

I have never done a mix & match before, so kept it fairly simple as my nail art skills are in their beginning stages. All I needed for this was 3 solid colored polishes, 2 sparkle polishes, some rhinestones and a dotting tool (or match!).

The polishes, tools, etc. that I used were:

Polishes used: Essie Bikini So Teeny & No Place Like Chrome, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in White On, Milani Nail Laquer in 533 Silver, Wet ‘n Wild Wild Shine in 460D, and Rush 60 Second Highh Speed Top Coat.

Tools used: dotting tool (found for SUPER cheap on and colored rhinestones (also found on Amazon).

Excuse the dry cuticles, obviously I need to moisturize more. Are you sporting an Easter or Spring themed mani? If so, tag me on Instagram – @beautnbowwows !!

Beauty ‘N’ BowWows is on Instagram!

Beauty 'n' BowWows Insta logo

This past week I started an Instagram account specifically for this blog! I have been trying to post a picture each day, specifically an EOTD or something to do with the BowWows, or just randomness from my life. If you are interested, you can find me @beautynbowwows, or click the link on the sidebar!

Let me know what your Instagram handles are and I will follow you, my feed is a little sparse right now!

Beauty Haul ~ Ulta & more + April Wish List Update

I hate health insurance. Not the part where they pay for my doctors visits, prescriptions, etc., but the part where they take all your $$ then make you jump through hoops to get anything fixed or to ask a simple question. I switched plans at the beginning of the year when my premium cost increased by over 100%, and it has been nothing but problems ever since. I enrolled in a new plan through the same company and called to be sure that they would cancel my old plan once the new one went into effect. They assured me it would cancel itself once I didn’t pay the bill. So, I pay for the new one and think I am good to go. Then, a couple weeks later, I start receiving bills for almost $500, which I assumed were from the old plan and were sent out before my cancellation went all the way through. I ignore them. THEN, I get letters saying that the premium I paid for the new plan was only partial payment on my $500 bill. WTF?? I call, find that my old plan was not, in fact, cancelled and this is why I am receiving all these bills. We fix it and I think, finally! this crap is all taken care of.

It wasn’t.

I get a check in the mail about a week later, refunding me all the money I paid to enroll in the new plan…so back on the phone I go and find out that they applied my payment to the wrong plan. When I asked how that was possible as I had to pay online with a specific identification code included in my offer letter, I get the run around and usual “mistake in the system” B.S.

So, let’s just say I was pretty flustered after all this, took my check, cashed it, and went to Ulta (responsible, right?). Here is what I picked up:

Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Nourishing Styling Treatment w/ Argan Oil{Retail $21.95 for 4.2oz} I have been in need of a new hair oil and didn’t want to spring for the pure argan oil just yet. We will see how this works! **April Wish List? √!**

Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Touchable Weightless Hairspray: {Retails $17.95 for 9oz} I was out of hairspray. I heard this one was good. I bought it. The end. **April Wish List? √!**

Anastasia Beverly Hills Lavish Palette{Retails $24.00} This palette came out over the holidays but was only available for a limited time. When I tried to buy it, it was already sold out, so when I heard it was coming back for an encore, I immediately went to the site and purchased it! Unfortunately, it is out of stock again 😦 **April Wish List? √!**

Batiste Dry Shampoo for Dark and Deep Brown Hair: {Retails $8.99} This was a repurchase, though I had the Medium/Brunette color before, but they were out of stock at the time. The touch of color isn’t so strong that the difference between medium and dark brown is noticeable (to me anyways).  **April Wish List? √!**

Philosophy Purify & Refresh Kit{Retail $43} I had originally intended on only picking up the Take a Deep Breath Moisturizer with SPF 35, but as I was looking around I found this kit! I had wanted the Purity Cleanser last month, but didn’t have the dough so this was a deal! Unfortunately, this version of the Take a Deep Breath doesn’t have any SPF, which I wanted for the coming summer months. **April Wish List? √!**

I also purchased a mini hairbrush to keep in my purse, but forgot to put it in the picture! Also, high five for staying on track with my Wish List and not going bug-eyed and grabbing everything in sight! Want to see what else I have on the April Wish List? Click here to check it out!

Collective Shoe Haul ~ BCBG, Sorel, Altra & db shoes

Collective Shoe Haul

I am not as crazy about shoes as some people, but seriously, who doesn’t love shoes?!? In my high school and college days, I pretty much wore flip flops, exclusively. Maybe some flats here and there or a pair of heels on a special occasion. My shoe-habits have changed quite a bit since then – I mostly wear running/athletic shoes for work (& when working out, obviously), boots or flats on a day-to-day basis, and heels whenever I can get away with it! I have finally gotten rid of all but one pair of heels that remain from the high school days and have slowly been re-growing my collection – much to the chagrin of the boy.

However, since I have been more regular with my workouts, which often include running, I have begun to develop calluses on the little bones on the outside edges of my feet. Now my once little, tanned, soft feet are starting to look rugged, rough and *gasp*!, wider.

Sad face 😦

I am determined to still wear pretty shoes, though. Pain be damned! So, in honor of this “pain is beauty” mood, here are a few little gems that I have collected in the last month!

BCBG booties

These are, by far, the most fabulous shoes I own. I usually hate booties, as I have short, fairly athletic legs (horse legs, according to the boy) and shoes that cut off at the ankles usually make me look like I have hooves. However, while out shopping with some girlfriends we went into the BCBGMaxazaria outlet and BAM! It was love at first sight. And, as fate would have it, they were having a 50% off sale on all their shoes!! SCORE! Unfortunately, they only had a few sizes left and none were my size so I gave up for the moment. I kept going back to them so I attempted to squeeze my foot in to a pair of 5.5’s (I’m usually a 6.5) and voila! they fit (with a little elbow grease)! It was magical.

Sorel Glacy Explorers

These are more “necessity” than “want”, but I have yet to have to opportunity to wear them. I had high hopes of going snowboarding at least 4-5 times this season, but with the worst winter conditions in 100 years, that just didn’t happen. I do not own a pair of snow boots and have been getting by with a fuzzy pair of converse boots, but I was tired of feeling like my toes would snap off. I had seen some really cute Sorel boots, but couldn’t deal with the price tag until I realized that Athleta was selling these Explorer Glacy ones! They still cost more than any other pair of shoes I’ve bought before, but I justified it because I charged it to my Banana Card (because that’s not real money, right?). The color was what really drew me to these – the beige with a pop of neon in the laces said fun and functional. Hopefully, the boy and I will get to the snow one more time so I can test them out!

Qupid Mary Janes

I was in need of a classic pair of mary janes as most of my other heels are either brightly colored, or have other aspects of interest. These fit the bill perfectly! They are not quiet as high (~4in.) and aren’t platformed, like most of my other heels, so will stay functional longer, I think. They have a little cut out on either side of the strap, making them every so slightly different than your average mary jane, and have gold hardware.

BCBG Laser Cut heels

These were also purchased at the BCBG outlet and were a STEAL! I think I ended up paying $35 (almost 3x less than the booties :/). They are a black felt material, which is the only downside to these, the booties and the mary janes – the felt gets dirty easily and will eventually rub off, so I have been very careful when I store them. I have seen lots of this type of laser cut heel lately, so will definitely be on-trend this summer. They also have a zipper at the back, which I absolutely love!

Lately, I have noticed a “pulling” feeling in my arch when I run, so I picked these up during a sale on The Clymb. They haven’t fixed the pulling in my feet (apparently I just need inserts) but they are incredibly light weight and comfortable! They are technically trail running shoes, which I don’t do much of, but have been working great in boot camp – the floors we work on are extremely slick and these help give me traction!

I have a surprise party to go to this week, which of the heels do you think I should wear???

Love, Natalia
